Leica Rangemaster CRF 1000-R Review – Ideal for Gun Or Bow

Shares

The Leica Rangemaster CRF 1000-R is an ideal entry level laser rangefinder for those new to hunting and archery as well as for seasoned hunters. It is designed with a very user-friendly single-button user interface that will let you easily range your target and take it down with your arrow or bullet. As a result of its simple design, it can also be used with one hand, left or right, and it fits easily into any pocket.

This top-notch laser rangefinder boasts a five-star review on Amazon and after examining it closely you will understand why it is rated so highly.

With so much important equipment to take with you on the hunt, you will appreciate its compact size that easily fits into your chest pocket. And you can use it as a monocular if you want to leave your binoculars at home. The less to carry the better!

The built-in inclinometer calculates the adjusted horizontal distance by factoring in the angle of the target in relation to your position. Consequently between this and the integrated ballistics program, you’ll be ready for every important shot either at the range or in the field.

Please note with the publishing of this review Amazon does not display the correct image of this item. I have sent them a message to update it as it is confusing to see a Leica scope rather than a Leica Rangefinder.

The LED with automatic brightness control will give you a clear picture for precise targeting from early dawn to twilight hours. It comes with 7x magnification with an integrated diopter compensation.

You should note that the product description on many websites label this rangefinder at 8x magnification, but when you purchase it and read the manual you will find that it is actually a 7x magnification rangefinder.

The LED display overlays the range and a square aiming reticle.

All of these features come with a reasonable price tag at an entry level purchase. Many will say that it is expensive, it is certainly not the cheapest on the market, but you do get what you pay for. You can also easily spend more than $1000 on a rangefinder.

What Are Main Features of the Leica Rangemaster CRF?

Reviewers like this laser rangefinder as it operates easily to calculate both the linear and horizontal distance of your target.  It boasts a super fast measuring time of 0.85 seconds. The angle compensation that is pre-programmed works for both bow or gun. There is also a scan mode for continuous measurement.

The display is illuminated with an auto-dimming red LED to help you easily range in both super-bright and low-light conditions. Most of all this is an added advantage if you are hunting in the winter and there is glare coming from the snow or in lower light conditions like dusk and dawn.

It includes an integrated basic ballistic functionality from 10 to 600 yards making it useful for archery too. It will range up to 1000 yards with 7x magnification. Some reviewers said they could range larger objects up to 1100 yards.

The lens is coated with AquaDura™ hydrophobic lens coating that easily repels dirt and water. Therefore you won’t have to worry about it being difficult to clean after a long hunting day.

The ergonomic housing constructed of magnesium is made even more durable with the addition of a lightweight carbon fiber. This is especially important if you are expecting to hunt in rugged terrain or conditions. You don’t want to have to worry about your rangefinder holding up if it gets tossed around a bit on your long hunting treks. Its design also makes it easy to hold.

It was tested to be waterproof for thirty minutes in up to three feet of water. We don’t recommending dunking it in water to test this! You can have peace of mind knowing that a little snow or rain won’t damage it.

How Accurate is the Leica Rangemaster?

The metering range accuracy is as follows:

  • +/- 1 m/yd at 400 yd
  • +/- 2 m/yd at 800 yd
  • +/- 0.5% @ 800 + yd

It can be set in meters or yards. Out of the box, it is set up in meters. You will have to manually switch it to yards.

What Do I have To Do To Find The Range Of My Target with the Rangemaster?

Finding the range to your target is extremely easy and takes less than one second for the rangefinder to calculate it.

  1. Aim at your target you want to range.
  2. Press the main button to switch on the device. At this point, the reticule will appear.
  3. Aim at your target with the reticule in your line of view.
  4. Press the main button again. Don’t worry when the reticule disappears for a moment while the measurement is calculating. You will then see the measurement.
  5. You can make another measurement by pressing the main button as long as the reticule is lit.

You can also make continuous measurements in scan mode to determine the range of moving targets.

You can click here to find the instruction manual.

What Kind Of Battery Does This Leica Rangefinder Require?

This laser rangefinder requires 1 lithium ion battery that is included in the package. It runs for approximately 2,000 measurements. Continuous scan mode will take more energy and decrease your number of measurements.

Do Archers Recommend The Leica Rangemaster CRF?

A good rangefinder is particularly critical when hunting with a bow. Since distance can be calculated as close as 10 yards archers will find that the Rangemaster works well for them. With many rangefinders, the magnification is too high to accommodate the closer ranges required by bow hunting. Furthermore, it is also very lightweight at only 6.6 ounces so it will not add too much extra weight to your gear.

What Is The Warranty?

I wrote an email to the manufacturer and asked for more details on their warranty as I was finding it difficult to find details online. It has a two-year limited warranty on any manufacturing defects. It does not cover impact, fire damage, and water damage that exceeds the specs.

Can I Wear Glasses And Use It?

Yes. All you need to do is press the rubber eyepiece cup down if you wear glasses.

The Leica Rangemaster CRF 1000r Is Fast, Accurate, And Easy To Use

In conclusion, you really can’t go wrong with the Leica Rangemaster CRF 1000r. It’s easy to use, fast, accurate, and lightweight to carry with you in the field. It gives you the linear range of your target and calculates the angle compensation. Most noteworthy you will be able to range from 10 to 1000 yards and hopefully, this will help you bring back the game you have been dreaming of.
