Vortex Ranger 1000 Review: Gold Standard Lifetime Warranty Included

Shares

When writing the Vortex 1000 Rangefinder review there were two factors that really stood out compared to the competition: their warranty and the sheer number of positive reviews. At the time of publishing this article, the Vortex Ranger 1000 had 119 reviews with a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon and 263 reviews on Vortex’s website with an overall rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars.

This is amazing for a niche product! If you already know you love it, click here to connect to Amazon now! I know it might seem like jumping ahead a bit to immediately talk about their warranty, but I can’t help myself as it gets even better.

There is no warranty card to fill out. It is lifetime, unlimited and unconditional. PLUS it’s fully transferable. So you can pass it down to your son or daughter or sell it second-hand.

See what I mean? Finally, a company completely committed to making customers happy. It’s definitely worth it to at least dig a bit deeper.

What Performance Features Do I Get With the Vortex 1000 Rangefinder?

With the Vortex, you’ll get a tried and true rangefinder that ranges for a line of site (LOS) and Horizontal Component Distance (HCD). This takes the guess work out of angled shots and saves both time and wasted ammo on wounded animals. This is especially crucial for mountain shooting. The line of sight mode is the straight line distance between you and the object. Horizontal Component Distance lets the rifle or archer shooter know the corrected yardage for the shot angle. HCD is accurate out to 800 yards with a slope of 15 degrees or less and accurate out to 400 yards with a slope of 15-30 degrees. One downside is that for distances beyond 500 yards and slopes with greater than 15 degrees, you would have to calculate them manually using the LOS mode.

If you prefer to make these measurements on your own, the menu is easy to use and allows you to toggle over to the LOS mode.

Vortex also provides a field reference card to help you determine MOA if you want to use the LOS setting. You could then use slope correcting ballistic drop data cards, ballistic cell phone applications, or PDAs with ballistic programs to calculate ballistics for your specific rifle and ammunition. Having to figure out this information yourself might be the deciding factor for you to spend a bit more on a rangefinder that has that function built it.

The Gunwerks G7 BR2 has that capability. It has a built-in wind meter  and you can set it to your gun’s individual ballisticsClick here for my review on the Gunworks G7 BR2.

Another cool feature is the scan mode. If you hold down the measure button until the crosshairs start to flash you can scan your environment and the yardage of various objects will be displayed on the screen.

It ranges to reflective targets from 11 to 1000 yards. Some people have reported they can get it to range to almost 1300 yards in the right conditions.

It ranges deer from 11 to 500 yards. You can range a deer much farther if you can find a more reflective target standing right next to it. Keep in mind the HCD limits mentioned above.

You can set the brightness of the display. If the crosshairs and display appear to wash out in the bright sun you can press the MENU button and adjust the brightness setting. The red reticle with 3 brightness setting is a huge asset when you are hunting in low-light.

It also ranges in yards or meters.

What Are Its Physical Features?

At 3″ wide by 3.9″ long and weighing only 7.7-ounces this is one of the most compact rangefinders available. It comes with an interchangeable clip that easily attaches to a shirt pocket that can also be taken off. The clip will attach to a pack, belt, pocket, or wherever you want to put it. Since the belt clip is interchangeable from the right to the left side of the body it is usable for right or left handed users. It has a rubber coating which makes it

It has a rubber coating which makes it waterproof and gives it a good grip and feel to its surface. It’s o-ring seal prevents moisture, dust, and debris from getting inside the rangefinder. This rugged design makes it waterproof for all conditions, rain, snow, sleet, sub-zero temperatures, and heat. You would not want to purposefully submerge it in water. However, if you did it accidentally, their lifetime warranty would have you covered.

The red digital lights really stand out against most backgrounds and make it very easy to see in all lighting conditions. You can adjust the lighting display to accommodate sunrise, midday, and late evening. The Vortex Rangefinder 1000 has

The Vortex Rangefinder 1000 has a tripod attachment on the bottom. It comes with a utility clip, neck lanyard, soft carry case, and a CR2 battery.

How Easy Is It To Replace the Battery?

The battery cover is easily removable. Battery installation with the included CR2 battery is easy to do with a clearly marked diagram on the inside of the battery compartment. It will also power down after 10 seconds of non-use to save on battery life.

How Easy Is It To Use?

I absolutely love the cleverness of their slogan “No Ph.D. Required”. I certainly don’t have a Ph.D. and I figured it out! Once you turn the rangefinder on all you need to do is click on the measure button twice and you are ranging. However, this is where the Vortex 1000 gets mixed reviews. Essentially the process requires three clicks (one to turn on and two to range). Many people would prefer for Vortex to change this process to only two clicks.

The Ranger eyecup is soft which allows the user to wear glasses.

What Are Some Of The Con’s Of The Vortex Optics Ranger 1000 Rangefinder?

One thing I found fascinating when reading all of the reviews on this product is the overall number of positive reviews. Even those who found something they did not like about it, still rated it high. I’m guessing that this is partly due to the fantastic no questions asked, lifetime warranty. None-the-less I want to highlight some of the negative comments, so you have all the information you need to make your decision.

  • Some have complained that it is a bit slower than some of the other high-end rangefinders-anywhere from one-second to four seconds to get a readout.
  • Some have reported difficulty ranging in the fog, only up to 17 meters.
  • Many people complained about having to press the measure button three times to range. Once to turn it on and then two more to get a range.
  • One reviewer wished that the cross-hairs where smaller allowing for more pin-point ranges when an animal is obscured by brush.
  • Color blind users have complained about the red reticle and would like to see the option to change it from red to black. They say it is absolutely not usable if you are color blind.
  • The case is not totally enclosed, and this allows some dirt to get in. Vortex advertises that the o-ring prevents this, but some users have said otherwise.
  • It does not have a wind meter.
  • This rangefinder does not offer a ballistics correction mode that will let you load your firearm’s specific ballistic data.

What Are The Minimum and Maximum Operation Temperatures Of The Ranger 1000?

It works between -20 and 130º F. This allows it to be used in virtually every weather condition.

What Is The Vortex 1000 Rangefinder’s Warranty?

I said it above, but I’ll mention it again. The vortex rangefinder 1000 comes with a VIP (Very Important Person) Unconditional Warranty. After reading hundreds of reviews on this product I learned that some people sat on it, dropped it in the mud, let their kids use it and more. In one of the Q and A questions on Vortex’s site the person answering the question on behalf of

In one of the Q and A questions on Vortex’s site the person answering the question on behalf of Vortex literally said you could return it in pieces in a plastic bag and they would repair or replace it. Honestly, the warranty alone tells me that the people at Vortex are confident that they have a high-quality product for you to use and they will stand by it too.

For many people, it is a huge piece of mind that it is the last laser range finder that they will ever have to buy. And the warranty is transferable so if you want to upgrade in the future you can sell it with an intact warranty. The only circumstances that they don’t cover are loss, theft, or obvious deliberate damage to the product. Pretty reasonable, I think.

Does Vortex Offer A Military/Veteran Discount?

Yes, on all of their products. You need to call them to get it.

Where Is It Made?

China.

How Does It Compare To The Leopold RX Series Or G7?

If you are looking for a basic rangefinder for a really great price, you probably have done quite a bit of homework. You might have looked at the Leupold RX series or even at a very high-end laser rangefinder like the G7 BR2. Compared to those, the Vortex is much more basic, but also significantly less expensive. Specifically, with the Vortex Optics Ranger 1000 you’ll be missing out on a device that calculates hold overs for wind and calculation for the ballistics of your particular rifle.

So you need to ask yourself how important is this to me and is it worth the extra money to get these two features? If you can live without that, and you see yourself mostly shooting under 600 yards, you’ll be happy with this rangefinder.

And you certainly cannot beat their lifetime warranty. Click the product name to see my review on the Leopold RX1000i, the Leopold RX1200i, the Leopold RX850i, or the G7 BR2.

Is Shipping Included?

Yes, when you buy this product from Amazon.

Should You Buy It?

YES! It is a great rangefinder for the price point.

It does not have all the bells and whistles like a built-in wind meter or the ability to add your rifle’s specific ballistics, so you will need to ask yourself if you are hunting or shooting in conditions where this will make a difference for you. If you want a basic rangefinder that is high quality and reliable, I don’t think you can go wrong.  And with worse case scenario you have an unbeatable VIP warranty that transfers should you want to sell it.
